Multifaceted and contemporary pop-rocker Mistine has announced her first full-length album i guess this is where we're at, to be released on May 23rd. The album is an eleven-track collection of songs that tackle topics of sustainability and environmentalism, while still maintaining a personal tone and exploring human connections at its core. Featuring fuzzy guitar solos, experimental vocal lines and 80's inspired synths, this is Mistine's most creative project to date.
It was seeing videos of Carly Simon performing that made Mistine, AKA Chistine Meisenhelter, want to pursue music. She attended USC’s Thornton School of Music for her Undergraduate degree, but really honed her voice as the artist Mistine while touring with Conan Gray for two years. Mistine’s career as a musician blossomed and she developed a strong resume as both an artist, songwriter, and session/touring musician. She’s toured with Conan Gray, æspa, BiigPiig, Meg Smith, WiztheMC, Zeph, McKenna Grace, Haiden Henderson, INJI, and Sierra Spirit to name a few.
Mistine devotes her life not only to music, but also to sustainability and the environment. After obtaining a Masters in Science for Sustainable Business Leadership, Mistine has served as the Sustainability On-Site Coordinator at the Las Vegas Sphere for the Grateful Dead residency and worked on Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour.
Mistine ties her two passions together to bring audiences music that speaks to both the human condition and our inextricable ties to nature.
Of her upcoming album i guess this is where we're at, Mistine shares, "I am constantly thinking about our environment. I really tired to incorporate ways to tell the story of what our world is going through in the climate crisis without explicitly saying it in the song–I began thinking about our planet as a friend or relationship and how each member would feel though this distraction and climate change - how we’re trying to preserve what we have left - as if I were trying to salvage a relationship with a loved one."
Musically, the album showcases remarkable versatility, from danceable pop tracks, to spoken word verses, to yearning ballads. And the nature motifs are not only lyrical but sonic as well, with the inclusion of chirping birds throughout
The lyricism of the album is both deceptive and striking, granting sentience to nature and creating a kind of pathetic fallacy wherein environmental phenomena not only reflect our emotions but possess them. By showing compassion for the Earth as a living organism, Mistine illustrates that understanding each other goes hand in hand with understanding our planet.
